Last Season
Last season was a glorious season for Manchester United winning both the Premier League and Uefa Champions League. They were the best team in England by a fair distance and clinched their second league title in a row. The star of the United team last season was undoubtedly Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo who finished as United’s top goal scorer with 32 goals. He also created vital chances for his teammates in what would become United’s most successful season since they won the treble in 1999. He also collected The PFA Player of the Year award. All summer long there has been rumours linking the player with Real Madrid but it now seems he’s likely to stay another year with European champions.
Although Ronaldo was the star it was the whole team that impressed as they beat Chelsea to the English title and the European title. United Beat Chelsea on penalties in Moscow to secure their 3rd European cup and manager Sir Alex Fergusons second at the club and then secured the English title on the last day of the Premier League season. All in all the season couldn’t have finished better for the Red Devils and their fans. They will also be glad that their star player Ronaldo isn’t going anywhere just yet.
This Season
I think like last season Manchester United will again be the team to watch. Although they haven’t really strengthened their squad they have managed to keep Ronaldo. That was Sir Alex’s Fergusons main priority. The United boss may yet add to his squad now that he knows Ronaldo is staying. United are believed to be in the market for a striker with Tottenhams Bulgarian star Dimitar Berbatov being linked with a move to Old Trafford. United have also been linked with Lyons French international Karim Benzema.
He has been quoted as saying "We might well start 2008-09 with largely the squad we had last season, and after all, they didn't do too badly!
"We have the right balance of youth and experience, thanks to the work we did in the transfer market the previous year.
"So I think we already have the men for the job."
So United may not strengthen in the summer but I still believe they will be the top team come next May.
